Who should have this procedure?
Collagen is a natural protein that provides structure to many areas of the human body. Some types of collagen are responsible for the smoothness and elasticity of skin, but as we age these collagens may begin to break down, causing wrinkles and imperfections in the skin or inhibiting adequate skin healing after injury. Collagen injections are often an ideal treatment for minor skin imperfections such as lines and scars. Juvederm‰³¢ is an injectable gel filler that can also be used to reduce moderate to severe wrinkles and folds. Collagen or Juvederm‰³¢ can also be injected to restore healthy-looking curves to cheeks and lips.
What is involved in the procedure?
The material most commonly used for collagen injections is manufactured from bovine collagen; however, for those who have allergies to beef products, human collagen or Juvederm‰³¢ are also alternatives. The doctor places injections in the areas where more fullness is desired. Care is taken in placement and the amount of material injected to achieve the desired effect. You may experience minor discomfort if you are especially sensitive to injections, but lidocaine mixed with the collagen minimizes the discomfort of the injected areas.
What is the normal healing time after this procedure?
You may experience minor swelling after your injections, but that will diminish within a day or so.
What results can I expect?
As the swelling goes down you will see a marked decrease in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. You will also be pleased with the more youthful contours created by collagen injections. The effect of Collagen injections last about three months and Juvederm‰³¢ injections can last up to a year before it will be necessary to have follow-up treatments.
