Who should have this procedure?
Breast Augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, will enhance the size and shape of a woman䴜s breasts. This surgical procedure is chosen to improve a woman䴜s body contour if she feels her breasts are too small or to replace volume lost because of weight loss or pregnancy.
What is involved in the procedure?
In breast augmentation surgery, the size and shape of the breast is changed by inserting a silicone implant filled with either saline solution or elastic silicone gel behind the breast. The implant may be inserted directly behind the breast tissue or in a pocket created within the muscle of the chest wall. After the surgery, the incisions are closed and covered with gauze bandages.
What is the normal healing time after this procedure?
Although you may feel tired and sore for a couple of days, you should be up and around within 24-48 hours. Your stitches will come out in a week to ten days, but you may have some swelling for three to five weeks. Depending on the level of physical activity required, you may be able to return to work within a few days. Your breasts will be sensitive to direct stimulation for two to three weeks, but should be back to normal soon. Your surgical scars will be noticeable for several weeks but will gradually fade and may become hardly noticeable.
What results can I expect?
Breast augmentation will give your breasts a younger, fuller appearance. If the procedure is done to repair breasts after cancer surgery or a traumatic injury, the improved appearance may help improve your self-confidence and healing.
